Down in Flames

It's Friday and you know what that means. It's time for our Western Conference Quarterfinals matchup  against the #8 Calgary Flames. Let's do thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.

Game 1

A little over a minute into the game, Moat sends the puck across the ice for PMom. PMom plays a long pass that works it's way back around the net and out on the other side. As #11 Moat is racing for it, #8 on Calgary at the bottom of the screen claims it and passes it back to the middle. Unfortunately for him, #46 Fisk is on hand to step in and unleash a quick shot.

Their goalie makes a good save but it's not good enough, as it falls for #44 PMom

Who puts it in the back of the net. 1-0 early on the power play!

Halfway through the second, #24 for Calgary collects the puck deep in his own half as we make a quick line change. #24 passes it up to #33, but #3 Keane races in and bodies him off the puck.

#46 Fisk races in to collect the loose puck, charges in,

And scores as everyone is converging on him. 2-0 and it looks like Game 1 will be going to the good guys.

Some real basic stuff a few minutes later, as PMom just slides the puck across the ice to the waiting #11 Moat

And he punches it in.  3-0.

Midway through the third period on a power play, Fisk gets open in the center of the ice and no one really challenges him as #53 The Lord of Hats finds him.

4-0, as their goalie gets a hand to it but can't push it wide enough.

A complete, dominant performance. Interestingly, all four winning teams in the West scored 4 goals today. We were the only one to pitch a shutout, though.

Sharks 4-1 Kings
Jets 2-4 Predators
Ducks 2-4 Stars

Game 2, Scumhunters lead the series 1-0

With about a minute left in the first period, things take a weird turn for us. #50 Woods chases down a puck and hammers it home from where #8 MMM Whatchya Say is standing in this screenshot.

Three folks converging on him but Woods finds a way to force it home. Uh oh.

Towards the end of the second, a promising attack builds.

#44 PMom sees a gaping window in the back of the Flames line and crosses the puck for #11 Moat. Moat collects it as the line is changing and pushes the puck along the boards to behind the net, where the newly entering the game #46 Fisk collects it.

Fisk turns around with the puck and slides it back to Moat, and

Vote Moat, it rhymes, 1-1.

In the third, a promising attack gets ended by busb. Bummer. The restart after he goes to timeout is in the Sega logo in front of our goal. The puck gets kicked out to #77 who unleashes what in soccer is known as a "thunderbastard"

And we are down 2-1 with 18 minutes to find an answer.

I hit a wrong button so I don't have the screen cap, but

They end up scoring again, not us. We aren't able to defend home ice in the early series so now we have to go on the road in danger of not being able to return.

It's not all bad news though.

We swept the weekly awards for the first time.

Game 3, Series Tied 1-1

Ok. So. On the road. Hm. I'm very nervous for this. But we survive the first period with no news being good news. Every quiet period is gonna be counted as a win as far as I'm concerned.

Midway through the second, Kashuno goes down with an injury and isn't able to continue. I ask Fisk to pick up his shifts. Other than that, the second period, too, goes quietly into the night.

It doesn't last long, though. Less than a minute into the third period, short handed. we completely forget about #71. #24 for the Flames slides #71 in

But Birdstrike comes up with an amazing save and manages to hold on. Play restarts at the Eastside Hockey Manager logo

The Flames get the puck out to #77, who passes back up to #24, who unleashes a shot from distance that Bird doesn't deal with. Down 1-0 with 19 minutes to play.

With 9 minutes left, play again restarts at the EHM logo with us short handed. #77 gets the puck and passes it into this scrum

And I'm not sure which of them scores but we're down 2-0 and this one is probably over.

Kashuno will miss a week after he suffered what the game is calling a shoulder contusion.

Game 4, Flames lead series 2-1

Off a power play midway through the first, we take a much needed road lead.

#53 Hats finds #44 PMom finds #11 Moat who touches it in. I'm so happy I could scream.

The rest of the first ends quietly and most of the second goes by as well. With 5 minutes left in the second, and right as our power play is expiring, Moat crosses the puck to PMom (I feel like I've written that sentence in one order or the other a lot today) who takes a shot that gets saved and spilled.

Who else but Fisk? He's on hand to clean up the mess and get us to a 2-0 lead entering the third, and that's how it ends, thankfully.

Game 5, Series tied 2-2

I apparently misunderstood how these playoffs work because we are back at home for Game 5. Good!

Well, I say good. We find ourselves down 1-0 after three minutes. Being short handed once again bites us in the butt. Ughhhhh.

With 5 minutes left in the second, we concede another powerplay goal and I'm... I'm a broken man right now. Well, I was. As I was typing this, Retro Futurist found Podima and they got us one back in the dying seconds of the second period. We're down 2-1 going into the third.

Cpig has a great chance to send it to overtime, but he misses the net completely and the final seconds tick away.

Well, the mission is clear from here. Let's... hm. I don't know what to say.

Game 6, Flames lead series 3-2

Away to Calgary. The first period goes quietly.

Had to go get my laptop charger. Thought I hit pause. Must not have. Get back to see we are up 1-0 at the start of the third thanks to PMush.

Moat scores from close distance to make it 2-0 and we're cruising.

Well, we were, and then we get short handed because of course we do and they make it 2-1. The closing minutes are bad for us until Murmur Twin puts it in an empty net and we walk out as 3-1 winners.

Game 7, series tied 3-3

We're at home for this one. Not that that has meant anything in this series.

Speak of the devil. Within 4 minutes we find ourselves down 1-0. A ridiculous shot from a ridiculous angle can't be dealt with by Birdstrike, and it looks like we may be going home early.

A minute later and there is a faceoff on the EHM logo by our goal which I can tell is not going to go well. And sure enough

Bird lets it hit him and slide in. Down 2-0 within 5 minutes. FFS.

The lifeline comes in the second half of the first. Keane releases Podima

Who almost bungles it, but recovers and slots home. 2-1 heading into the second.

Halfway through the second, a faceoff from the sega logo in front of their goal leads to a shot by The Lord of Hats and a huge scramble. The puck pops out and

PMOM IS ON HAND TO PUT IT AWAY. 2-2! GAME ON!!!!! The second ends with no further action, so into the third. Twenty minutes to send one of us home.

Unfortunately for me and my heart, the only good chance comes with 10 seconds left in the period. They take a shot from a long way away but I start yelling NOOOOOOO at my computer as Birdstrike pushes it away to the corner. Phew. OVERTIME TO DECIDE THE WINNER. Good gosh.

A faceoff in front of their goal. Promising. Well, until it fizzles to nothing immediately.

Okay, shortly after, we're on the other side. Maybe this is the one?

Nope, a counter attack that they almost score on. Ughhhhhh. Bird spills it and thankfully is able ot get it out of there. He pushes it out to Leatherman, to Murmur Twin, to... wait....

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUT OF NOTHING. We almost get scored on and I'm just catching my breath and quickly we break down the other way, #55 finding #56 finding #46 and gosh dang it WE'RE GOING TO THE NEXT ROUND.

#1 Mumbles Scumhunters win the series over #8 Calgary Flames 4-3 in Overtime of Game 7

Wow.

So, who is on deck?

That's a little incorrect. I was 3-1-1 against the Sharks.

The Team Leaders screen doesn't update anymore since it's the playoffs, so I guess I'll end with these screens.

SEE EVERYONE NEXT FRIDAY

Rounding the corner

I apologize for missing Friday. I was in Delaware and didn't get home until super late, followed by a day trip to Dallas for the weekend so time was not in high supply. I will do a make-up entry tomorrow. Additionally, I'm trying something new this entry: Video! Unfortunately, it took a couple of tries to get things just right so the first game or two of this update will have sparse information. Let's just get started. First up, the Sabers at home. Here is PMush scoring! Unfortunately, that was the only good thing to happen to us this game. Next up, Ducks on the road!  A well taken RF goal.  And there here is This Is A Stickup scoring, but only in picture form. Those were the only highlights I managed.  Ok, on to this game against the Canadiens, where I have an actual lot of highlights to get through.  The puck gets wrapped around the back of the net. Stickup went out to collect but Hats beats him there. Hats...

Epilogue Year 6

July 2022 Ecco Raven, Magnus Gallant, Murmur Twin (Kings), CC Keane (Ducks), Diq Nol (retiring), Bird Strike, Kash Uno (Blue Jackets), and Retro Futurist (Kings) are all out of contract and have left their respective teams. Ecco signed for Scumhunters for 4 years, $3.3 million per year Murmur Twin signed for Scumhunters for 1 year, $4.8 million Retro Futurist signed for Scumhunters for 4 years, $3.7 million per year Bird Strike signed for Scumhunters for 2 years, $1.8 million per year Magnus Gallant signed for Scumhunters for 3 years, $1.35 million per year CC Keane signed for Scumhunters for 2 years, $3.6 million per year Kashuno signed for Scumhunters for 3 years, $1.6 million per year LOL that Bird is getting less money than Ecco. Bird has always started and Ecco has been #2. I wonder if that is changing? In the hurry to sign up all these players, we are over the salary cap I think, so someone if not a few folks will probably be released again. Circle of life. This is ...

Epilogue Year 5

July 2021 Magnus Gallant and Bottle Knight have left the Scumhunters. The AI let a lot of players go so we are down to a squad of 12 Scumhunters, 4 randos, and 2 guys the computer made up because we didn't have a lot of players. Cant look at their "Information" or give them an actual contract. Nice job, AI. Should mean a lot of players in. Sure enough, Magnus Gallant re-signed. This is a guy whose latest contract extension was for $920,000 and has exclusively played in the AHL at Tuscon the last three years. He was just handed a $3.6 million dollar one year deal. AI dumb. Bottle Knight also returned for 2 years, $3.2 million per year. I mentioned possible retirements coming up. Here's one. And actually, a day later, he went ahead and retired, not bothering to play the last season on his contract. So here are FL's final screens. 23 Scumhunters remain. August 2021 Austria will host the 2026 Olympic games. September 2021 The L...
