Shark Week

Time to begin our next round matchup against the San Jose Sharks. Real quick, here is how we faired against them in the regular season

We split the home games against them, both as 3-2 finals. On the road, we won one shootout after being tied 3-3 and lost another. In our most recent time to play them, though, we ran them off the ice, winning 7-0. I would hope we can get back to that!

Game 1

Less than three minutes in and there is a face-off at the EHM logo in front of the Sharks goal. Podima gets the puck, finds Stickup, and Retro Futurist

slams it in to give us the 1-0 lead. A perfect start to try to calm the nerves after how the last round ended.

Halfway through the first, Poque collects the puck deep in our end during a quick line change. Poque finds Retro Futurist who looks up to find Podima

#77 Podima draws the goalie out and makes no mistake

Putting us ahead 2-0.

Immediately from the face-off, #52 Bottle Knight gets the puck and races down the left wing. He sends it in to #10 Capitalist Pig

But the shot gets cleared out. #4 Asiina takes control of the puck

And passes it back to Capitalist Pig

Who scores this time. 3-0 with eight and a half minutes to play in the first period.

With mere seconds remaining in the first period, the Sharks player plays the puck off the boards. Fisk steps in to steal it away.

He centers it for #11 Moat

Moat passes back to Fisk, who draws the defenders away while #44 Pinterest Mom sneaks in. Fisk lays it off for PMom

And PMom scores with 7 seconds left in the first period to extend the lead to 4-0.

The second period continues along without much happening until Podima gets injured. Murmur Twin is playing 4th shift Right Wing and is able to play both Left and Right, so I ask them to step in and take over Podima's shifts the rest of the way.

A bad Retro Futurist turnover leads to a quick counterattack for the Sharks. 4-1. I send Ecco in to cover the third period, reckoning a 3 goal lead is safe and that it would be nice for everyone to get some playoff ice time. Nothing happens in the third.

Okay, time to check the injury news.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this means Podima is done for the year. RIP. That bad news is accompanied by another Scumhunters award.

Congrats, Birdstrike.

Game 2, Scumhunters lead series 1-0

Game 2 is where things went off the rails against the Flames so I am hoping we can just take care of business today and be comfortable.

My wish is granted early. Five minutes in, Pinterest Mom is streaking down the left wing with one defender to beat. The goalie comes out a little bit to cut down on the angle so PMom lays it off to Fisk, who has been skating down the center untracked.

This is while the shot is on the way from Fisk's stick to the net. Look at how far away the goalie is. Never had a chance. 1-0 early.

I know Birdstrike just won defensive player of the week, so it's pretty shocking that he lets in this goal from #55 of the Sharks

It seems like Birdstrike has a real hard time with extreme angle shots for some reason. I wish he would fix that. 1-1. Into the second period we go.

Fisk... I wish I had a gif for this one, but let me just try to draw the path to this goal.

I guess he just wanted to show off. 2-1.

Diqnol turns the puck over near the end of the second and it's a quick goal the other way. 2-2. Into the third, and I am starting to get real nervous.

Early in the third and we are breaking down the ice. Murmur Twin passes the puck into Kashuno.

Kashuno finds Bottleknight.

Bottleknight back to Murmur Twin.

Saved. But Kashuno is on hand.

 3-2. 15 minutes to play.

The lead doesn't survive though. SHORT HANDED LIKE ALWAYS we give up the tying goal. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Overtime.

With four minutes left in overtime, Poque is given 2+2 for high sticking. So I'm just kind of sitting here typing waiting for them to score on us again. Either way, we're in trouble. Either we give up another short handed goal and lose right now or we will just lose in a shootout. Hm. Well, actually, I think it'll just go to a second overtime. Not particularly... Yep, ok, there's the goal. Thanks Poque.

Sigh.

...ok? Congrats again Bird.

While we will probably see PMush again, I am not very excited about having to retool the lineup. I don't have another player ready to just slot right in. Maybe the tinkering will help? Optimism.

Game 3, Series tied 1-1

Away for the next two.

A quick turnover is hunted down by Poque, who owes me one. He gets it to RF who finds #41 Stickup who gives us a 1-0 lead.

Little under 13 minutes left in the first period so a quick, relatively early goal. The rest of the first passes without incident.

I'm getting ready to type up a note about how the Sharks tied it up but Hats steps up and saves the day. He knocks the puck clear up the ice for Fisk who puts it away. 2-0 as we head into the third. Fingers crossed.

#33 Retro Futurist sends the puck across the ice for #72 Diqnol

Diqnol gives it back

And RF lays it to Stickup who fires home. 3-0 and we're sitting on easy street.

My dog decided to come say hi and I start petting him. I look up in horror to see the game is now 3-2 and that the Sharks have pulled their goalie and are mounting the pressure with just under two minutes left. Luckily, we hang on and survive.

I like having a series lead. I hope it stays this way.

Game 4, Scumhunters lead series 2-1

MOTHER F------ INJURIES AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Diqnol gets hurt near the end of the first period. LW#2 officially cursed. Once again, I ask Murmur Twin to pick up the shifts.

Speaking of Murmur Win, on an attack near the end of the first period. Retro Futurist crosses the puck to her from the right wing to her spot on the left. She misjudges it (I like to think it's because she was playing RW earlier), backtracks for it, grabs it, and then punches RF through.

Got a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

Deep into the second, Murmur Twin is out on the left wing.

And then drifts inside

To launch a shot from a ridiculous range. 2-0. Jeez maybe I need to play her on the Left more often.

Oh, also, as I was typing that up (we scored with just over a minute to play in the second), Fisk went down and scored to make it 3-0. My bad Fisk, I just kind of assumed the period was over. 3-0 going into the third.

Less than a minute into the third, the Sharks strike back, and I am getting super nervous.

Face-off on the Sega logo in front of their goal and my screen capture program doesn't work but PMom scores to make it 4-1, and we are heading back home with a chance to put this series away early.

The powerplay gods were kind. We scored on 3 of the 4 times we were up a player. Ok, let's check on Diqnol...

I'm glad it's only a few days. I don't have a 1-for-1 replacement for Diqnol at this point. My only unrostered player is a defender. I could try placing Podima on the 24 day DL and recalling a player from our ACL team maybe? I don't know if I'm allowed to do that in the playoffs. Hmmmmmmm.

Wait, no player maximum on the roster right now? Ok, cool, yep, doing some call ups. Bringing back Magnus Gallant and introducing.... Quidnose! He asked to be added a few times and I never had a reason to make a roster move since then.

Game 5, Scumhunters lead series 3-1

Good news, we're at home.

Bad news, we're down 1-0 after less than a minute. Luckily, Fisk makes it 1-1 pretty quickly.

At the end of a powerplay we're given due to a game misconduct on the Sharks, Vote Moat It Rhymes gives us the 2-1 lead.

The puck hits the net when the power play had two seconds left, so we stretched it for all it was worth. Still, a 2-1 lead means we're a period closer to ending this series. On to the second.

Nothing happens in the second, so we're 20 minutes away from being in the Western Conference Final.

Ten minutes. Five minutes.

Ah, at five minutes, something is happening. Asiina snags the puck.

Welp. Never mind. Retro Futurist roughs, it's a power play, AND OF EFFING COURSE THEY SCORE IMMEDIATELY. 2-2. Overtime.

Poque literally hands one of their players the puck about 3 minutes in and he passes and they score. FFS POQUE WHAT ARE YOU DOING. THAT'S TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unreal. 1-2 at home, 2-0 on the road this series.

And now Fisk is injured. Kill me.

Game 6, Scumhunters lead series 3-2

Away for Game 6. And PMom has us off to an early 1-0 lead. Killer. Nothing else for the first period.

Thirty seconds into the second, it's level at 1-1. Cool.

Halfway through the second, we're down 2-1. Also cool.

In my pity party I save the wrong screenshot, but during the middle of a line change during a powerplay we just go Leatherman -> Stickup -> BK up the ice and BK pokes it in. 2-2 going into the third. I really, really, really don't want game 7.

Which of course, means, a minute into the third period we are down 3-2.

I left the room at this point to go get a drink and mentally prepare for game 7. It ended 4-2.

Ugh.

Some good news before Game 7.

Game 7, series tied 3-3

At home for this one at least. Here we go.

Had to restart my screenshot program and PMom scored in the first five minutes. Up 1-0 going into the second. Well, so I thought anyway!

The Sharks pop up with less than two minutes left into the first to tie it. 1-1 going into the second.

Midway through the second and Busb just steps in and steals the puck away from one of their defenders dallying on it. He crosses it to Quidnose

Who scores his first goal. 2-1.

Then

I don't know who scored but it's 2-2 halfway through the second. Great.

Murmur Twin races down to steal the puck away from their player

Followed by a quick pass to Diqnol who pushes it on to Stickup

And it's 3-2 going into the third. It's happening!

Leatherman passes the puck along the boards around the back of the net to Bottle Knight

Who finds Quidnose streaking into the center.

4-2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bottle Knight adds an empty net goal

And it's all over.

Breathe.

#1 Mumbles Scumhunters win the series over #4 San Jose Sharks 4-3

Okay, lets see who we get...

The Predators. Once again, that's a little incorrect. We outscored them 13-6 as we won all four matchups against them in the regular season, three in regulation and one on a shootout.

Wrap up

SEE EVERYONE NEXT WEEK

Rounding the corner

I apologize for missing Friday. I was in Delaware and didn't get home until super late, followed by a day trip to Dallas for the weekend so time was not in high supply. I will do a make-up entry tomorrow. Additionally, I'm trying something new this entry: Video! Unfortunately, it took a couple of tries to get things just right so the first game or two of this update will have sparse information. Let's just get started. First up, the Sabers at home. Here is PMush scoring! Unfortunately, that was the only good thing to happen to us this game. Next up, Ducks on the road!  A well taken RF goal.  And there here is This Is A Stickup scoring, but only in picture form. Those were the only highlights I managed.  Ok, on to this game against the Canadiens, where I have an actual lot of highlights to get through.  The puck gets wrapped around the back of the net. Stickup went out to collect but Hats beats him there. Hats...

Epilogue Year 6

July 2022 Ecco Raven, Magnus Gallant, Murmur Twin (Kings), CC Keane (Ducks), Diq Nol (retiring), Bird Strike, Kash Uno (Blue Jackets), and Retro Futurist (Kings) are all out of contract and have left their respective teams. Ecco signed for Scumhunters for 4 years, $3.3 million per year Murmur Twin signed for Scumhunters for 1 year, $4.8 million Retro Futurist signed for Scumhunters for 4 years, $3.7 million per year Bird Strike signed for Scumhunters for 2 years, $1.8 million per year Magnus Gallant signed for Scumhunters for 3 years, $1.35 million per year CC Keane signed for Scumhunters for 2 years, $3.6 million per year Kashuno signed for Scumhunters for 3 years, $1.6 million per year LOL that Bird is getting less money than Ecco. Bird has always started and Ecco has been #2. I wonder if that is changing? In the hurry to sign up all these players, we are over the salary cap I think, so someone if not a few folks will probably be released again. Circle of life. This is ...

Epilogue Year 5

July 2021 Magnus Gallant and Bottle Knight have left the Scumhunters. The AI let a lot of players go so we are down to a squad of 12 Scumhunters, 4 randos, and 2 guys the computer made up because we didn't have a lot of players. Cant look at their "Information" or give them an actual contract. Nice job, AI. Should mean a lot of players in. Sure enough, Magnus Gallant re-signed. This is a guy whose latest contract extension was for $920,000 and has exclusively played in the AHL at Tuscon the last three years. He was just handed a $3.6 million dollar one year deal. AI dumb. Bottle Knight also returned for 2 years, $3.2 million per year. I mentioned possible retirements coming up. Here's one. And actually, a day later, he went ahead and retired, not bothering to play the last season on his contract. So here are FL's final screens. 23 Scumhunters remain. August 2021 Austria will host the 2026 Olympic games. September 2021 The L...
